RECONCILIATION
AND RENEWAL
LEADERSHIP LESSONS FROM A PLACE OF HELL
For 27 years, Nelson Mandela endured a brutal life behind bars. When he was released
in 1990, it would have been understandable to find a bitter soul bent on revenge.
But Mandela emerged with strength, empathy, and a vision of a united South Africa.
Elected president in 1994, he now stands tall as the moral leader of our time.
How could anyone survive such raging adversity? What gave rise to Mandela's inner
core of principled leadership? And perhaps most important for us, are there lessons
in his life that we can practice in our own lives?
In search of answers, I visited Robben Island, the infamous apartheid-era prison
that held Mandela and hundreds of other political prisoners. After returning home
and reflecting on a very thought-provoking trip, I assembled a special report that's
posted to the Web. It's full of photos, observations, and insights. And though it
looks back at a terrible chapter in history, it's more about creating a positive
present and future.
